Coach Position FAQ
How are coaches arranged in a train?
Coaches in an Indian train are arranged based on a standard composition determined by the railway zone. Usually the train engine is at the front followed by luggage and brake vans, then AC First Class, AC 2 Tier, AC 3 Tier, Sleeper Class, and finally General (unreserved) coaches. Pantry cars are placed in the middle of the train for easy access. The exact order varies by train type. Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains have only AC coaches arranged in a specific order. The guard van is typically at the rear of the train. Each coach has a unique number printed on its side.
